Our Guides

Last week you could find us in Portugal training up some of our German speaking guides for a new bespoke guided cycling route we have put together for a German client. This particular route goes from Porto to Lisbon on electric bikes. For our guided tours, at The Way Experiences we pride ourselves in the quality of our guides. Our minimum standards are high! We personally take our guides through the routes they will be guiding step by step and pedal by pedal. We make sure they take note of the best places to stop for coffee, take photos or the perfect place for just a little rest on the way. We test the local restaurants and cafes for the best spots for lunch and dinner. We ensure our guides are knowledgeable on local architecture, culture, cuisine, history, wildlife, fauna, and flora.

Why Travel With Us

Cumbres Travel is an incoming tour operator specialising in offering services for travellers wanting to discover the best of Spain in a different way: by bike or on foot. We have been organising tours for individuals and groups since 2008 and work with some of the most important travel agencies worldwide in the active holiday sector.

One of our most popular tours from day one has been the Camino de Santiago. So much so, that we had built up such a level of expertise in this area that we decided to create The Way Experiences. The Way Experiences specialises purely in the Camino and all its variants to make the client’s experience a unique one.

The Camino Portugues

The official starting point of the Portuguese Camino is Portugal´s capital, Lisbon. There are then 621km separating you from your destination – Santiago de Compostela. Most pilgrim´s however start their Portuguese Camino in Porto.  Back in 2016 was the first time I cycled the Porto to Santiago Coastal route of the Portuguese Way. Since then, I´ve tested out all the variations of The Camino Portugues by foot and by bike. I would struggle to say which is my favourite as they are all perfect journeys in their own ways. The Camino Portugues is the second most popular route after the Camino Frances. If you are planning on walking this route, to reach Santiago from Lisbon (621km) allow 25 days, from Porto (243km) allow 10 days and from Tui (117km) allow 5 days.

Client Reviews

“It was an amazing memorable trip. The sights, the people, the food! Directions were good enough not always precise, but it was ok, it added to the adventure- And you have to have a sense of adventure for these kind of trips! The luggage arrived at the designated hotels without a glitch. The Hotels were all acceptable in a great lotions and accommodation acceptable as well. The staff was great though, and location was good. The trip was indeed memorable, and I would surely recommend it with a caveat. You do need to be in good physical shape with biking experience as you advised. Loved all the villages and hamlets we visited. Enjoyed the different biking terrains. Bikes were great. Great trip! Took a million pictures.”

“Just a note to say that I very much enjoyed the cycling trip. We had a great team in Luis and Diego, they were very knowledgeable about the area and did everything they could to help the holiday run smoothly. Luis was very encouraging and thoughtful, and certainly helped me to complete some difficult sections of the Camino. Diego’s picnics were brilliant! I always felt safe and the bikes were just right for the terrain. I did find parts of the cycling really hard, both because there were some really steep inclines and because the terrain was difficult. However, that made arriving in Santiago all the more special. I thought the choice of accommodation was generally very good, I particularly liked Hostal la Salle and Residencial Portas del Sol (although a hotel breakfast is always preferable to a café). Overall a great trip, just a couple of years late!”

“From start to finish the Way Experiences looked after our needs with the utmost care. We felt totally supported and secure for the whole journey. The Itinerary was carefully planned and measured out in manageable sections for each day. The directions were very clear. The hotels were lovely: comfortable, clean and extremely hospitable. We had the most wonderful time. The whole experience exceeded our expectations. We cannot recommend it highly enough. Sarah Jane is an absolute gem!”

El Camino del Norte – The Less Trodden Path

Often overshadowed by the more popular and transited French and Portuguese Way, The Camino del Norte is an absolute gem of a route. The Camino de Santiago originated in ancient times as a pilgrimage taking Christians to visit the tomb of Saint James (Santiago). All routes take you to the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela, and more specifically Santiago Cathedral.
